Zardari, Gilani meet to sort out memo fiasco
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency on Thursday as reports of a civilian-military confrontation on the political horizon are spreading. Although a one-line official statement about this meeting did not explicitly state what actually transpired during the meeting, there are strong indications that the recent uncertain political satiation, having been triggered by the infamous memo case, was the agenda of the meeting. An official press release only mentioned that the current situation was discussed when Gilani met PPP Co-Chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari. Considering the current situation of the country, it is not difficult to imagine what would have been deliberated upon during the meeting, as rumours are rife with the news of a standoff between the civilian and military leadership. The prime minister openly spoke about conspiracies against the PPP government in his speeches at an exhibition and in the National Assembly, asserting that a state within the state would not be allowed, in an apparent reference to the country’s security establishment. The military and the fragile civilian government are at loggerheads after the army chief and ISI director general submitted their depositions in the Supreme Court, demanding thorough inquiry into the memogate. A complete silence is, however, prevailing in the Presidency in the backdrop of the memo case. staff report/online
