Pakistan’s Anna Hazare joins PML-N
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Local political worker and human rights activist Jahangir Akhtar while reposing confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif has joined Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Addressing a press conference along with PML-N central leader Senator Zafar Ali Shah here on Wednesday, Akhtar, Pakistan’s self-claimed Anna Hazare said the PML-N leadership played a key role in strengthening democracy and democratic institutions in the country.
“Mian Nawaz Sharif is the only mature politician in the country who served as prime minister of the country and chief minister of Punjab province twice and I have strong faith in his leadership and believes that he can take the country out of the crisis,” he added.
Akhtar said Sharif’s positive stance on Pak-India friendship; efforts for education for poor people like Danish schools and his support for the Lawyers’ Movement were the reasons for his joining PML-N.
Akhtar demanded that the government make 10 percent increase in the education budget while reducing same percentage from the defence budget. In this regard, I alone will march daily on Jinnah Avenue while carrying the flag, he added.
Replying to a question about anti-corruption movement, he said the PML-N had promised him that if the parliamentarians failed to pass the accountability bill, it would unilaterally submit it to the House. Akhtar also announced that if the bill were not proposed within four days, he would start his hunger strike again. He alleged that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was a party of feudal lords and not of politicians. The current rift between PPP and PML-N over the bill is about who should head the commission, said Akhtar.
“The PPP wants to appoint retired judge while PML-N wants to appoint a serving judge,” Akhtar explained.
