President will not file separate reply in memo case: AG

* Says court has been told that federation’s reply is president’s reply

ISLAMABAD: Attorney General of Pakistan Maulvi Anwarul Haq said on Thursday that President Asif Ali Zardari would not file a separate reply in the memo case and federation’s reply was his reply.

It is worth mentioning that the federation, in its reply, has stated that president and prime minister have no link with the memo issue.

Talking to the media on Supreme Court premises after the memo case, the AG said that he had informed the court several times that the federation’s reply was the president reply. Regarding the question about the supreme commander-in-chief, he said that according to the constitution, prime minister of Pakistan was the supreme commander-in-chief.

The AGP said that he would inform the court about the Parliamentary Committee on National Security’s mandate today (Friday).

Meanwhile, Shafqatullah Sohail, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, has submitted his written arguments in the apex court. He stated that the government was opposing the investigation in the memo, which proved its involvement in this matter.

Sohail had sent a letter to the chief justice of Pakistan on November 19, pleading that every Pakistani was at threat due to the alleged memo and that there was a need to find out the truth in the interest of the nation.

Taking suo motu notice on his plea, the CJP had issued notices to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, ISI Director General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, former ambassador to US Husain Haqqani, the attorney general of Pakistan and others.

In his order, the court said that this application should be treated as a petition under Article 184(3) of the constitution as prima facie since a threat to the security of Pakistani citizens had been alleged in this matter.
