CM Punjab orders surprise visits of markets to check prices

LAHORE: Taking notice of the sky-rocketing prices of the edibles, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif directed the concerned officials to conduct surprise visits of vegetable and fruit markets with an aim to keep the rates under a strict check.

Despite being an agricultural country and having a high yield of vegetable crops, the prices of vegetables registered an unprecedented hike in the past weeks. The rate of tomatoes went as high as Rs200 per kilogram. Similarly, the prices of garlic, ginger, potatoes and onion had also crossed Rs100 per kg.

Punjab CM, Shahbaz Sharif finally took notice of the situation and ordered the price controllers to raid the markets of vegetables and fruits in their respective areas at least thrice a week to keep a check on profiteers. He said normally it is in the morning when the business activity in these markets hits peak.

He directed that besides Sunday bazaars, at least 150 ‘Sasta bazars’ be set up across the province while corrupt elements in the market committees be identified and sent home.
