US Consulate marks Sindhi Culture Day with qawwali

KARACHI: Consul General Michael Dodman and the staff of US Consulate General Karachi celebrated Sindhi Culture Day with a reception and Qawwali on Saturday. American Qawwali band Fanna-Fi-Allah performed a set of traditional songs, including Qalandar’s Dhamal and Moor Muhara, for a group of invited media and cultural guests. Addressing the media, prior to the concert, CG Dodman commented on his love of Sindhi culture and observed that this is a day that all Pakistanis can celebrate. “Sindhi people have wonderful traditions and history. Those traditions and history are an important part of Pakistani culture and one that all Pakistanis can be proud of and identify with,” he said. American qawwals have deep roots in Pakistan and Sindh, with several band members having studied with Pakistan’s present day Qawwali greats for over a decade. The band is touring Pakistan this month as part of a State Department-sponsored programme and would be performing throughout Sindh and Punjab in the coming weeks. staff report
