Sindh decides to go for LG polls in March

KARACHI: A Sindh cabinet meeting held to chalk out recommendations for the local government (LG) elections schedule finally decided on Monday to conduct the polls in March next year. The meeting, which was held at the Chief Minister’s House with Qaim Ali Shah in the chair, decided to write a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan in this regard. The new local government laws of the province and fresh delimitations in various districts of Sindh for the elections have been challenged in superior courts by the opposition parties, whose leaderships have cast serious doubts over the preparations and procedures being adopted by the provincial authorities in the run-up to the election. Political observers believe the Sindh government would not be ready to hold the LG polls before March even after completing all preparations, procedures and formalities, and would side with the Punjab government, which also wants to considerably delay the polls owing to incomplete legal formalities. The Sindh government has said it wants to hold the elections in the most transparent manner. online
