Lithuanian Independence Day celebrated

ISLAMABAD: To celebrate the Independence Day of the Republic of Lithuania, the Lithuanian consul general and his wife Dr Ismara Khan hosted a reception dinner on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Masud M Khan apprised the audience of the history of Republic of Lithuania since its independence. He traced the various stages of economic growth, the republic’s increasing rise in gross domestic product (GDP) and increase in exports to the tune of $35 billion.
He highlighted Lithuania’s achievement in the IT sector, forestry, fisheries and agriculture. He elaborated Lithuania’s role in the European Union, NATO and other International bodies.
Khan also mentioned the role of the European Union in its assistance to Lithuania for economic development. He said, “The taking over of the Presidency of the European Union by Lithuania itself is a matter of great importance to the young nation.” He said Lithuania strongly believed in the objectives of the European Union vis-a-vis the maintenance of bonds of friendship, peace and intra-regional travel, tours and trade within the European Union. He suggested that Pakistan and its neighbouring South Asian countries could emulate this model of peace for regional cooperation.
Speaking on the occasion, European Union Head of the Delegation and Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Bertil Wigemark congratulated the consul general for holding the celebrations. He said the European Union wished Pakistan’s movement towards a strong, democratic and sustainable economic growth. He renewed the European Union’s continuous support for various development projects in Pakistan.
The event was attended by prominent personalities from all walks of life including government functionaries, members of the parliament, diplomatic corps, former ambassadors of Pakistan to various capitals, diplomatic analysts and representatives of electronic and print media.
