LAHORE: Dense fog blanketed several cities of Punjab on Tuesday while 11 people were killed in road accidents blamed on poor visibility on roads.
Travellers faced hardship as trains, flights and road traffic was affected across the province.
In Lahore, four people, including two women, were killed when two vehicles collided with each other in DHA’s Ghora Chowk area.
Separately, seven persons of a family were killed in a collision between a van and oil tanker in Khan Bagh area of Nowshera Virkan.
Police said the oil tanker was on its way to Gunjranwala amid thick fog when it hit a van coming from the opposite direction.
Seven people – Afzal, Irshad Bibi, Meraj Bibi, Iqbal, Bisma Iqbal, Nazeer Ahmad and Khalida Perveen – were killed in the accident.
Sources in Pakistan Railway said that Rawalpindi-bound Pakistan Express, Taizgam Express, Lahore-bound Night Coach and Allama Iqbal Express were four to five hours behind the schedule due to fog.
Hawelian-bound Hazara Express, Peshawar-bound Khyber Mail and Lahore-bound Shalimar Express were also late by two to three hours.
Meanwhile, the National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) said that visibility on various sections of the motorway was low and people should, therefore, avoid “unnecessary” travelling. Commuters should strictly adhere to road safety rules, switch on fog lights and use defoggers while driving in foggy areas, NH&MP said. agencies
