ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI: Director Generals of Military Operations of Pakistan and India would meet at the Wagah border on December 24 to discuss ways to ensure ceasefire along the Line of Control.
This will be the first meeting between the DGMOs of the two countries after a gap of 14 years, although communication between the two personnel is maintained over the phone.
The announcement comes three months after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh proposed the meeting to defuse border tension.
According to the ISPR, the DGMO of Pakistan has invited his Indian counterpart to the meeting.
Meanwhile, Indian media reports said the Indian DGMO has accepted the invitation and the meeting would take place at the Wagah border. India will be represented by DGMO Lt Gen Vinod Bhatia while Maj Gen Aamer Riaz will lead the Pakistani side.
The purpose of the meeting is to curtail tension along the Line of Control. The decision to meet
was taken during the September meeting between Prime Ministers Nawaz Sharif and Manmohan Singh in New York.
During the Nawaz-Manmohan meeting, it
was decided that both countries would abide by
the 2003 ceasefire agreement to end tension along the border. agencies
