KARACHI: Officials from the US Consulate General in Karachi, and the US State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) formally handed over 48 new pickup trucks to the Sindh Police in a ceremony at held at the Sindh Police Headquarters on Thursday.
Sindh Police will use the trucks in Karachi, as well as rural Sindh to increase police presence in critical areas and enhance police response time. “We are happy to continue our cooperation with the Sindh Police to address the law and order challenges they face,” said Acting US Consul General Anu Prattipati.
“These new trucks are only a small piece of the more than $20 million worth of equipment, training, and infrastructure support that the American people have provided to Sindh Police since 2011 in an effort to reduce crime and support the rule of law in Karachi and throughout Sindh.”
Since 2011, INL’s Police Assistance Program has initiated projects valued at $29 million. These projects include armoured personnel carriers, vehicles, specialised forensic equipment, bulletproof jackets and helmets, and vehicle GPS trackers. The INL is also assisting Sindh Police in the areas of curriculum development for recruit and in-service training to enhance the capacity and professionalism of police officers. In addition, the INL is reconstructing the CID building damaged in a suicide attack in 2010 and renovating three women-staffed police stations in Karachi.
