Concerted efforts in place to eradicate polio: president

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain said on Monday that eradication of polio was the government’s top priority.
He said that “concerted efforts and innovative steps” in collaboration with all the stakeholders were being taken at all levels to make Pakistan a polio-free country.
He was talking to a delegation of World Health Organisation (WHO) led by its country head Dr Nima Saeed Abid.
The president urged WHO to support government’s efforts to eradicate polio from the country. He appreciated WHO for its support and assistance to the government of Pakistan during natural disasters and emergencies besides assisting the country in the fight against polio and other epidemic diseases.
The president said that WHO had been working in Pakistan and assisting the government and people of Pakistan in health related issues and combating epidemic diseases especially during natural calamities.
Dr Nima Saeed Abid thanked the president for the meeting and assured that the WHO would continue its efforts to provide medical facilities to the people of Pakistan and to work for complete eradication of polio from the country.
Dr Nima was accompanied by Dr Kazi Ghulam Nabi and Dr Mariam Mallick, officials at WHO’s country office.
Separately, Pakistan ambassador-designate to Azerbaijan Khalid Usman called on the president at the Presidency and discussed matters related to his new assignment.
The president felicitated the newly appointed ambassador and urged him to focus on further cementing Pakistan’s bilateral relations with Azerbaijan.
The president, on the occasion, said the government attached great importance to the development of trade and economic cooperation as an integral part of its foreign policy objectives.
He emphasised on robust pursuance of economic diplomacy by all diplomats to further cement economic footprints of Pakistan in the world markets.
The president expressed hope that the newly appointed ambassador would work with full devotion for further strengthening Pakistan’s trade and commercial ties with Azerbaijan.
The ambassador designate thanked the president for the meeting and assured him that he would earnestly work to augment Pakistan’s bilateral relations with Azerbaijan with particular focus on enhancing trade, business and investment ties.
