Dissolution of PMDC demanded
PPI
KARACHI: Ex-member of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Dr Shershah Syed on Monday showed serious concerns over the increasing medical seats in public-private medical colleges and registration of new medical colleges by PMDC without any consideration of merit and facilities available.
He expressed these views while addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club (KPC). Senior Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) leader Dr Mirza Ali Azhar also spoke on this occasion.
Dr Shershah said it was very disturbing to know that during the last few years, PMDC was in control of a group that was using public and private sector for their personal benefit. He said PMDC was allowing new medical colleges, and increasing seats in existing ones without fulfilling basic conditions. He alleged, “This PMDC group was also recognising degrees and diplomas to benefit friends and relatives. It is unfortunate that majority of medical colleges are functional without faculty, basic facilities, laboratory and hospitals.”
He said vested interest group of PMDC was responsible for the deterioration of medical education and training in Pakistan.
Dr Azhar said on the occasion that medical education was on the verge of collapse in the country and there was a dire need to look into the matter of PMDC seriously. “We have no issue with registration of new medical colleges, but PMDC should maintain transparency in this regard,” he said, adding that an organised mafia was involved in the destruction of medical education in the country.
The speakers urged the government to immediately dissolve PMDC and form a new one representing all Pakistan. “The PMDC should work as an independent, autonomous and powerful body to organise medical education and training in Pakistan. It should act without pressure and not for the benefit of certain groups.”
They demanded of the government that no new medical college or dental colleges should be allowed to open in public and private sector, no existing medical college or dental college in public and private sector should be allowed to increase seats, no medical college should be allowed to increase their fee and no new degree or diploma should be recognised till the formation of new PMDC.
