IHC stops Special Court from working, co-accused trio in Musharraf treason case get stay
INP
ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued stay orders against November 21 decision of the Special Court trying former military ruler Pervez Musharraf for high treason, stopping the court from working further and suspended the order of the special court that directed the federal government to include former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, former federal minister Zahid Hamid and former chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, as co-accused in the treason case.
After their nomination as co-accused in the case, the trio had filed a petition in the IHC seeking withdrawal of their names from the treason charges. Their lawyers, Iftikhar Gilani and Wasim Sajjad appeared before IHC Justice Athar Minallah, and argued that the special court had exploited its authority by declaring his clients as ‘co-accused’ without any investigation. They demanded that the special court, which is headed by Justice Faisal Arab, be stopped from working. At which, Justice Athar Minallah, issued stay orders against the court’s November 21 ruling, and stopped it from working further. The hearing was adjourned till February 03. Musharraf is facing high treason charges for suspending the constitution and imposing emergency rule in 2007.
