Senators demand practical steps to counter internal security threats

By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: Condemning the Peshawar school incidents, legislators of the opposition and the treasury benches in Senate on Monday asked the to government take practical steps to counter internal threats to the country.

They said that on the pattern of hanging terrorists, the government should also ensure hanging of those who were involved in the killing of people over religion grounds, including the killer of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer. They said that the killer had already confessed to his crime in court, and orders of his hanging already issued.

The Senate on Monday adopted a one-point agenda of discussing the incident of Army Public School in Peshawar. The senators expressed their concerns regarding the performance of the government and law enforcement agencies to counter terror activities. The legislators were of the view that the incident was a total failure of the federal and provincial governments, as well as intelligence agencies. They vowed that the sacrifices of these innocent children would not go waste.

The senators demanded effective and meaningful operation against terrorists and at the same time against their supporters, apologists and those who misguide people in the name of religion.

Speaking on the occasion, PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar criticised the PML-N leadership, which he claimed had failed to implement the national security policy to counter terrorism. “According to reports, the prime minister visited General Headquarters (GHQ) to attend a meeting which was chaired by the COAS but not himself, while the COAS is also signing the death warrants of terrorists and visiting Afghanistan with proofs against terrorists,” the PPP senator said. “It looks as though the political leadership has shifted from Islamabad to Rawalpindi to fight terrorism. I believe that we are still not serious regarding the war on terror,” Babar added.

MQM Senator Col (r) Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said the government had failed to counter activities of terrorists and should take action against the Taliban supporters and sympathisers. “No mercy for terrorists and its supporters!”
