First draft of legal, constitutional amendments presented to PM
Nawaz says we want to make Pakistan a safer place for every Pakistani regardless of his faith, ethnicity

ISLAMABAD - The legal team of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday presented to him the first draft of constitutional and legal amendments for trying enemy combatants and hardcore terrorists.

The draft was presented during a follow-up meeting, headed by the prime minister, on the implementation of the National Action Plan for countering terrorism and extremism at the PM’s House here. Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Special Assistants on National Affairs Irfan Siddiqui, Khawaja Zaheer Ahmed and Barrister Zafarullah, Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt along with other senior officers attended the meeting.

The proposed legal and constitutional amendments are meant to try the elements involved in execution, abetting and financing of mass murders. The prime minister asked his legal team to share the draft with other political parties and take their input as well. He said that government has made an iron resolve to deal with miscreant elements with a heavy hand. The government is committed to take all necessary steps to ensure that blood spilled in Peshawar carnage does not go waste, he said.

He emphasised on seamless coordination between law enforcement agencies as well as among the provincial governments and the federal government to achieve optimum results within a short period of time. On directions of the prime minister, National Counter Terriorsm Authority (NACTA) would be made functional. Its executive meeting has been convened on Wednesday to be held under the chairmanship of Minister for Interior Affairs Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.

The prime minister said that the government would give legal protection to the valiant jawans of our armed forces in their fight against terrorism. He directed that instances of terrorism or sectarian violence against minorities should also be included in the schedule of offences against the terrorists. He said that we want to make Pakistan a safer place for every Pakistani regardless of his faith or ethnicity.
