PM terms corruption-free Motorway Police nation's pride
Nawaz announces raise of 20 per cent in salaries of NH&MP
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday appreciated the performance of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP) and said the merit-based and corruption-free institution was a pride for the nation.
Addressing the annual award distributing ceremony of the NH&MP here at the Prime Minister’s Office, the prime minister said that the people of Pakistan appreciated and lauded the honesty and professionalism of NH&MP. “Such acknowledgment by people is the best award any public service organisation can get,” he added.
He said that Pakistan was proud of the Motorway Police that was free from all sort of corruption and malpractices. The prime minister announced a raise of 20 percent in the salaries of NH&MP. “It is a small acknowledgement of your dedicated, honest and exemplary service towards Pakistan and for making our highways safe,” he said.
He acknowledged that the NH&MP lacked good vehicles and other problems that were hampering its performance and assured that the government would do its best to provide them better facilities. “The nation is proud of you and expects from you highest standards in professionalism,” he said and mentioned that it was also playing a key role in making the national highways safe from militants.
He said that the police forces of Pakistan were standing along with the armed forces to rid Pakistan of the scourge of extremism and terrorism. He said for the past 16 years, the officers and men of the motorway police had performed well and earned the appreciation of the road users. He also mentioned the recent inductions of 1,500 personnel on merit in NH&MP and hoped that the professional standards of the force would be raised further.
The prime minister said that the NH&MP needs to fill up its vacancies for effective policing. He said when he presented the idea of the motorway, it was considered as a unique idea, and however time has proved its worth that caters to thousands of users daily. He said that he would soon lay the foundation-stone of the Lahore-Karachi motorway which would provide an alternative fast route and boost trade and economic activities.
He said with the completion of the Pakistan China trade corridor a great deal of economic activity would be generated. He said awareness about road rules and regulations was very important for the drivers and these were now being incorporated in school curriculum. NH&MP Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmed Cheema said the National Highway and Motorways Police, which was inaugurated in 1997 by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, had now grown into a role model for other institutions.
He mentioned that the United Nations had termed NH&MP as the ‘Island of Excellence’ and was also regarded by other international organisations as the 'only corruption-free institution' in public sector of Pakistan. He said NH&MP was pursuing integrity, enforcement of rule of law without fear and favour, courteous attitude with travellers and helping the commuters in distress.
