PTI denies opposing special trial courts
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has clarified that it has not opposed the formation of special trial courts or military courts in the meeting of constitutional experts held on Monday.
Media reports suggested that PTI’s leader Hamid Khan had opposed the formation of military courts, saying the constitution did not have any relevant provision in this regard. However, talking to Daily Times, Hamid Khan clarified that the PTI has not as yet decided whether to return to parliament or not, therefore it has not assured the government to become part of parliament for legal amendments to form the special trial courts.
“Our Core Committee is to take a decision in this regard. This does not mean we don’t support special trial courts. Our stance is that we are yet to take a decision whether to return to parliament or not. Therefore, whether we would be part of parliament for required legal amendments is not clear as yet. It’s up to the government.
If it addresses our reservations on the formation of judicial commission, then we may return to parliament,” he said, adding that the PTI has voiced complete backing to government to eliminate terrorism including the formation of special trial courts.
The meeting of legal experts was held from the platform of special committee of legal experts comprising representatives of all mainstream parliamentary parties and government officials including Barrister Farooqh Naseem, Hamid Khan, Zafarullah Khan, Aitzaz Ahsan and others.
