Security plan finalised for LB polls in Karachi

KARACHI: Karachi police have finalised security arrangements for the Local Bodies (LB) elections in the port city, scheduled for Saturday, December 5.

Out of 4,154 polling stations, 631 are declared most sensitive and 1,891 sensitive. Collectively, the metropolis has been divided into three sectors.

More than 35,000 security personnel including police cops, Special Security Unit (SSU), Rapid Response Force (RRF) and Rangers personnel will perform duties for security of polling stations.

Over 5,500 police personnel have been called in from interior Sindh while 5,000 cops will be provided by the Sindh Police.

As per the contingency plan, seven police personnel will be deployed at most sensitive polling stations while one will be present at the rooftop. At sensitive polling stations, five personnel will perform duties and one will be deployed at the rooftop.

Three police personnel will be deployed at each normal polling station.

Over 500 police mobiles (police vans) and 800 motorcycles have been provided to personnel. Four DIGs, 41 SSPs and SPs, 53 DSPs and more than 5,500 ASI to Sub-Inspector rank officials have been assigned the task of security.

On the other hand, more than 9,000 Rangers will assist police in the election security, while 20 Pakistan Army companies will be deployed in the city on the polling day.

According to sources in the Sindh Home Department, Army contingents will be present for backup support of police and Rangers and also patrol in the sensitive areas in all districts of Karachi.
