Senate body recommends state award for martyred pilot Maryam Mukhtar
ISLAMABAD - Senate Standing Committee on Defence on Friday recommended martyred Flying Officer Maryam Mukhtar for state award, saying that courageous fighter pilot embraced martyrdom while trying to save the school children.
During the meeting of the defence committee held on Friday, defence officials passed a resolution to recommend the first female martyr of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Maryam Mukhtar for state award. The resolution said that Maryam did not leave her fighter plane in order to take it away from a school. The act of bravery deserves a national award for the courageous pilot.
Flying Officer Maryam Mukhtiar - one of Pakistan’s female fighter jet pilots – lost her life when her training plane crashed in Mianwali on last Tuesday.
Squadron Leader Saqib Abbasi and co-pilot Maryam were on a training mission on an FT-7PG aircraft when they encountered a serious in-flight emergency. Maryam embraced martyrdom in the incident and became the first female pilot of PAF to attain this great honour while the male officer, Abbasi, sustained serious injuries.
She was among about 20 female fighter pilots in the Pakistan Air Force who only began inducting women in combat roles in 2006.
