Over 80 million exercised right to vote in LG polls: CEC
ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner, Sardar Raza Khan Saturday said more than 80 million people exercised their right to franchise in the Local Government elections.
Briefing the media on the occasion of completion of the three phases of LG polls in Punjab and Sindh, the CEC lauded the role of army, rangers, police and other law enforcement agencies in the vote exercise.
He congratulated army, Rangers, police, polling staff and officials of ECP over successful completion of three phases of LG elections in two major provinces of the country.
“I hope these institutions will continue to cooperate with the Election Commission in future as well,” the CEC said.
He said this time around special attention was given to the training of polling staff. Over 300,000 polling staffers rendered their services in the poll exercise while more than 180 million ballot papers were printed, he told the reporters.
Sardar Raza Khan further said that the total expenditure in conducting the LG elections amounted to Rs3.8 billion.
He said it was necessary to give special powers to Sindh Rangers to maintain order and ensure peaceful atmosphere. The provincial governments also worked hard, he added.
The CEC said with the exception of an event in Rawalpindi the poll exercise remained largely peaceful in the two provinces.
