‘Counter-terror actions helpful in ending terrorist networks’
Jilani says Pakistan, India interactions to help reduce tension, revive dialogue process
WASHINGTON – Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani delivered a keynote speech at an event hosted by the World Affairs Council here in the US capital.
The event was part of the Ambassador Series programme the World Affairs Council has convened over the last few years. The occasion, featuring Ambassador Jilani, was attended by a wide section of over 100 participants representing the academia, think tanks, US officials and members of the corporate sector.
Ambassador Jilani spoke about Pakistan-US relations, regional security challenges and educational advancement in Pakistan. Highlighting the recent high-level engagements from both the sides - including the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Washington in October - he informed the audience that the bilateral relationship was moving forward.
The two countries were expanding cooperation in all vital areas ranging from defence, counter-terrorism and non-proliferation to energy, economy and trade as well as education, science and technology. Ambassador Jilani also talked about the emerging challenges and Pakistan’s contribution to bringing peace and stability in the region.
He shared that comprehensive counter-terrorism operations were instrumental in eliminating the terrorist networks operating from the region. He expressed the hope that the renewed contacts between the leadership of Pakistan and India would help reduce tension and revive dialogue process for the resolution of all outstanding issues.
Sharing details of Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and connectivity in the region, he informed about the Heart of Asia conference being co-hosted by the leaders of Pakistan and Afghanistan in Islamabad. He hoped that the outcome of the ministerial conference and Islamabad declaration would contribute to bringing economic prosperity and mutually beneficial cooperation in the region.
An interactive Q&A session following the address afforded the participants the opportunity to seek the ambassador’s perspective on specific issues in Pakistan-US bilateral relations.
