SC rejects Qadri's review petition, upholds death sentence

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has dismissed Mumtaz Qadri's review petition on his death penalty and lawyers' request to form a larger-bench.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard on Monday the review petition filed on behalf of Mumtaz Qadri.

During the hearing, Justice Khosa said all the arguments are of no use as the charge of blasphemy was not proved against the Punjab's slain governor Salman Taseer.

"These are man-made laws in which reforms can be made for improvement," he remarked.

Later, rejecting Qadri's review petition, the Supreme Court upheld Mumtaz Qadri's death sentence.

A former commando of the Punjab Police’s Elite Force, Mumtaz Qadri had been sentenced to death for the murder of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer in Islamabad’s Koshar Market on January 4, 2011.

Qadri had confessed to murdering Salman Taseer, saying the latter had committed blasphemy.
