Court sends Dr Asim to jail on judicial remand

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi has sent former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain-- close aide of former president Asif Ali Zardari -- on judicial remand to jail until December 30 over allegations of facilitating terrorists at his private hospital.

The development came a day after the administrative judge of anti-terrorism courts ordered a trial of the former petroleum minister, rejecting a report by the investigating officer of police seeking his release from custody and acquittal from charges of treating and harbouring them at his hospital in Karachi.

Administrative judge Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto disagreed with Investigating Officer DSP Altaf Hussain's report which argued that there was not enough evidence to keep the former minister in custody.

Dr Asim was taken back into police custody following the verdict and presented in the ATC again today where the judge sent him to jail on judicial remand until December 30.
