Role of PM Nawaz’s mother in resumption of Pak-India talks

NEW DELHI: Not only Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif but also his mother played a significant role in bringing Pakistan and India at dialogue table.

According to Hindustan Times, Indian External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj during her visit to Pakistan had also met PM Nawaz Sharif’s mother, Shamim Akhter.

“You have come from ‘my country’, promise me you will return only after normalizing Pak-India relationship,” Sushma Swaraj quoted PM Nawaz’s mother as saying at Indian Lok Sabha, the newspaper said.

Hindustan Times has also quoted a source, who the newspaper said travelled to Pakistan with Sushma Swaraj, as saying that the Indian External Affairs minister sought Shamim Akhter’s blessings and said ‘everything will be good in your shadow’.

Sushma Swaraj had visited Pakistan earlier this month to participate in Heart of Asia conference which was held in Islamabad on December 8.

She also met PM’s adviser on Foreign Affairs, Sartaj Aziz, and in a joint statement both the leaders announced to initiate ‘comprehensive bilateral dialogues’ between Pakistan and India.

“Indian pm Narenda Modi will visit Pakistan next year,” Swaraja announced during her visit to Islamabad.
