Sindh CM lands in hospital from airport
Has brief meeting with PM at airport who assures him Centre has due respect for provincial autonomy; invites Qaim to Islamabad for talks on Rangers issue; Qaim says he will visit federal capital after consulting party leadership
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah received Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the Jinnah International Airport on Monday but had to leave for the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases for a medical check-up as he was unwell and did not accompany the premier in his subsequent engagements.
The Sindh CM had a brief meeting with the prime minister who told him that the federation had due respect for the autonomy of the provinces and the impression being created that the Centre had been interfering in Sindh affairs was incorrect.
The prime minister said this during his very brief interaction with the Sindh chief minister. The prime minister invited the CM to come to Islamabad so that all the quarters concerned, including Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, should sit together in the federal capital to seek a solution to the complaints raised by the provincial government regarding the ‘invasion-like’ situation being faced by Sindh owing to the stepped up activities by the federal law enforcement and investigation agencies in the province. In response to the PM’s invitation, Qaim Ali Shah said that he would go to Islamabad after consultation with the party leadership.
The CM reportedly complained to the prime minister on the occasion that the federation had not been listening to the concerns of the Sindh government regarding the issue of policing powers to the Rangers in Karachi. It seemed that the interior minister had been directly interfering in the affairs of the province. “Now you too are not listening to us so you better tell us what we should do,” the CM is said to have remarked on the occasion.
The PM, on the occasion, said that the Sindh chief minister being a senior politician should know better that issues were settled through talks. “We are not interfering in the affairs of your government,” the PM responded to the Sindh chief minister. He said that the federal and Sindh governments together would continue the targeted operation in Karachi. He said that once the Sindh chief minister visited Islamabad, all the other quarters concerned would also be invited to the meeting.
He assured the CM that he would listen to all his concerns during the proposed meeting in Islamabad while the issue regarding the powers of the Sindh Rangers would also be dealt with in the talks. The PM said that the federation believed in resolving all the pending issues concerning it through talks.
Later, from the Karachi Airport, the PM accompanied with federal inisters for finance and commerce, went to Port Qaim for inspecting under-developed coal-powered electricity generation plant being built with Chinese assistance.
