UN efforts insufficient to ease Israel-Palestinian tension: Maleeha Lodhi
By: Online
NEW YORK: Pakistan’s permanent representative to UN Maleeha Lodhi has said UN efforts to deescalate Israel-Palestinian tension are insufficient and not satisfactory.
“UN efforts to defuse ongoing tension between Israel and Palestine are not sufficient and satisfactory. Resolution of this problem is must to ensure lasting peace in Middle East”, she said this while speaking in a debate over the issue of Palestine in UN.
She went on to say that lack of interest on part of UN has inflicted a setback on its own confidence. “This conflict is fomenting anger and despondency in Arab and Muslim world,” she remarked.
Several countries including Pakistan have backed Palestinian stance, but the countries which can play vital role in addressing this problem are unable to do so, she added.
There is a need to initiate result oriented talks to ensure peace in Middle East, she stressed.
Maleeha underlined that UN Security Council would have to perceive its obligations, adding that political maturity and vision would have to be demonstrated to give timeline to end illegal occupation.
“Celebrating solidarity day with Palestinian people reminds us of perpetration of brutalities on people of Palestine by such a usurper who has flagrantly defied the international law and norms of humanity,” she added.
She denounced the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, Gaza strip and Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israelis.
