Pakistan seeks to forge ties with new US administration
WASHINGTON: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi on Thursday said chief aim of his US visit was to review Islamabad’s relations with Obama administration and forge links with the new administration.
Talking to media at The Pakistani Embassy, he said Islamabad was looking forward to working closely with the new US President with particular focus on economy and trade.
“Pakistan is aiming at building a comprehensive, sustained and forward-looking relationship with the US,” Fatemi said.
The Special Assistant said he met with US National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Corker , Senator John McCain and other officials and policy makers during his Washington tour.
He said in his meetings with US officials he highlighted the sacrifices rendered by the people and security forces of Pakistan during country’s war against terrorism.
He emphasized that Pakistan had paid a very heavy price and was firmly committed to eliminating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
Fatemi underscored that his current official visit to US afforded an excellent opportunity to explain Pakistan's perspective to his US counterparts regarding key issues such as governance, economy and counter-terrorism efforts.
