Government brushes aside rumours regarding demonetisation

ISLAMABAD: The Finance Ministry spokesman has categorically denied the news reports and rumours circulating in sections of the press and business circles regarding the demonetisation of the Rs 5000 note.

A statement issued by the Finance Ministry said that the government had neither taken such a decision nor was there any justification for the discontinuation of the Rs 5000 note.

The spokesman elaborated that the position the current denomination of highest value notes in Pakistan had was significantly smaller as compared to those of major currencies, such as the $100, Euro 200 and Pound Sterling 50 notes. He added that during 2015-16, only 17% of the printed notes were of the Rs 5000 denomination.
