Nisar says government will probe Axact scandal

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Friday revealed plans to form a committee to look into the fake degree scandal involving Axact.

This decision comes days after a United States Court charged an Axact executive who was allegedly involved in a fake diploma scheme worth $140 million.

The executive, Umair Hamid, was charged with wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with the scam that affected thousands of customers. A complaint had been filed in a Manhattan federal court which resulted in his arrest and charge.

The minister said that Taliban leader Mullah Mansoor had been issued a computerised national identity card (CNIC) in 2005, laying the fault at the feet of the previous government. He said the former administration had issued passports and documents to foreigners who had been involved in crimes such as human trafficking.

The minister added that his government was trying to rectify their actions, saying “The government cancelled 32,400 passports and blocked 22,3000 CNICs during last three years. It also verified 101 million CNICs across the country. The past government merely cancelled 500 passports."

He added, "Besides this, around 95 million unregistered mobile SIM cards were blocked in just 90 days."

He said those involved in these issuing these fake documents would be held accountable.

In this regard he said that the government had formed two more committees, to look into both the Axact case and the money laundering case involving the Khanani and Kalia firm. Though, he added that most information on the latter case had been wasted.
