Police on toes to keep uncouth hooligans at bay on New Year’s Eve

More than 5,000 policemen would perform security duty

LAHORE: City police have finalised security and traffic plans on the eve on New Year night, which falls today (Saturday).

More than 5,000 police officials will facilitate the citizens and maintain situation of law and order across the city. In this connection, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Captain (r) Amin Wains has said that strict action would be taken against those violating laws, indulging in drinking, aerial firing, wheeling, aggressive racing and hooliganism.

According to details, six superintendent of police (SPs), 35 divisional superintendent of police, 83 station house officers (SHOs) and 174 upper subordinates would perform duties, while the Divisional SPs have directed the officials concerned to ascertain advance information regarding possible events being conducted in their respective areas on New Year.

The CCPO said that no immoral or illegal activity would be tolerated. He said that no one would be spared who would indulge in hooliganism, bothering others or indulging in dangerous driving, while no one would be allowed to display arms of any kind.

Meanwhile, DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf has said that special squads have been formulated to check hooliganism and motorcycles without silencers, vehicular racing and overloading on New Year night, especially on important roads including The Mall, Jail Road, Main Boulevard, Ferozepur Road, Ring Road and other important roads of the city.

On the other hand, the City Traffic Police has also finalised a plan to maintain traffic flow on city roads. Three SPs, 11 divisional superintendents of police (DSPs), 97 inspectors, 290 patrolling officers and 2,900 traffic wardens and five emergency squads have been formed for the purpose. The DIG also appealed to the citizens, especially parents to discourage their underage children not to participate in dangerous activities on New Year’s Eve.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) DIG Syed Ahmed Mobeen has said that the traffic police has finalised a comprehensive traffic plan. “Traffic wardens will not only stop citizens from any violation but will also keep an eye on suspects. All SPs, DSPs and circle officers will give briefing to all traffic wardens about duty at different points in the city. Holidays of all officers have been cancelled and traffic wardens will be deployed in two shifts. Wheeling and hooting on roads will not tolerated at all. Special traffic squads will be deputed for crackdown against wheeling,” he said.

He has appealed to the general public to cooperate with traffic wardens. Syed Ahmed Mobeen said that the City Traffic Police would take strict action against wheelers and those driving cars in dangerous way. He said that a number of wardens and other officials had been deputed on The Mall, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Main Boulevard, Defence, Lahore Ring Road, Shalimar Road, G T Road, Canal Bank Road and other important roads across the city. He said that cases would be registered against those indulging in wheeling and over under section 279 PPC.

The Interior Ministry has also imposed Section 144 across the country.
