Won’t dissolve assembly come what may: Abbasi
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday said he would not dissolve the assembly no matter what might happen and succumbing to any pressure was just out of the question. “People have voted for Nawaz Sharif, not me,” he added.
Abbasi said political decisions were made at polling stations, not in drawing rooms or courts, adding that the decisions should be made by the people, as they would face the consequences for making any wrong choices. Heavens won’t fall if the assembly completed its term, remarked the prime minister.
There was also a need to redefine the civil-military relations, said the prime minister who was talking to an All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) delegation led by its president Sarmad Ali.
Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami, Hameed Haroon, Rameeza Nizami, Mehtab Khan, Umar Shami, Waseem Ahmed, Munir Gillani, Khushnood Ali Khan, Javed Shamsi, Haroon Shah, Syed Mumtaz Ahmed, Mumtaz Tahir, Ali Hasan, Humayun Gulzar and others were also part of the delegation.
Abbasi said he, as the prime minister, did not bother about any internal or external pressure and would not dissolve the assembly at any cost. He also dispelled the impression of political instability in the country and said anyone disliking him could move a no-trust motion.
The prime minister said the civil-military relations were smooth and both leaderships discuss and make decisions on every important issue. He added that he was looking after the finance ministry’s affairs and it had been working well. The nation had reposed its trust in Nawaz Sharif who put the country on the right path and now his [Abbasi’s] government was fulfilling the promises made with the people, said the prime minister. He criticised the NAB law which, he said, was imposed by a dictator to split the political parties. He said two hearings of a baseless reference were being held weekly which didn’t happen even for the so-called plane-hijacking case against Nawaz Sharif.
On the other hand, Abbasi noted, even a charge sheet could not be framed for Dr Asim Hussain in a corruption case of Rs450 billion. He said no one had the right to interfere in the government, adding that political parties and leaders were not created in a day. Only four national leaders – Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan – were produced after Quaid-e-Azam and Liaquat Ali Khan, he reminded. Efforts were being made for the last one year to destabilise the country, said the premier, adding that people should decide whether the July 28 benefited or damaged the country. Courts too do not take the effects of judgments on economy into consideration and they should not pass verdicts which may destabilise the country, Abbasi stressed.
He noted that the court verdicts on Steel Mills and Karkey cost the government Rs 200 billion and $765 billion respectively. The premier listed economy as the top-most agenda item for the country and said all stakeholders should formulate policies which were in the interests of economy.
Mentioning the government’s achievements, Abbasi said he was against managing the rupee value artificially and its value against dollar should remain at around Rs110, expressing the hope that there would be no further devaluation and price hike.
The prime minister said he held a meeting with all the parliamentary party leaders on the delimitation bill and addressed their reservations, adding that no justification had left for not passing the legislation in the Senate. He said the provinces talked about taking advantage of the 18th Amendment but they were not ready to discharge their responsibilities in this connection. It would have been much better if the text of the constitutional amendment was read thoroughly before passing the same, Abbasi remarked.
The prime minister also held a meeting with a CPNE delegation which included Arif Nizami, Imtiaz Alam, Zia Shahid, Shaheen Qureshi, Imtiaz Alam, Ikram Sehgal, Aijaz-ul-Haq, Jameel Athar, Arif Nizami, Dr Jabbar, Wamiq Zuberi, Kazim Khan, Anwer Sajdi, Tahir Farooq, Rehmat Razi, Ayaz Khan and Ghulam Nabi Chandio.
