KARACHI: The members of ‘Mazdoor Ittehad’of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) were staging a protest to show solidarity with the laid-off workers in front of the KESC head office Friday, Geo News reported. Strict security measures were taken around the vicinity.

While protesting, two workers tried self-immolation who were later rescued by the other protesters and sent to the hospital.

Senior labour leader and Chairman KESC CBA Union, Ikhlaq Ahmed addressed the protesters and said that 500 employees were laid off while over 4,000 employees were put in the surplus list. He vowed to continue the peaceful protest until their demands are met.

Earlier this week, Ikhlaq Ahmed had announced that the laid-off workers of the privatised electricity utility entity would stage a peaceful protest demonstration in front of the KESC head office on February 3 as despite reiterated reminders, protests and assurances their demands were yet to be met by the management.
