President grants remission on 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal

KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari, on the advice of the prime minister, has granted special remission in the sentences of prisoners on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH).

According to an official handout issued on Friday, the special remission in sentences ranges from 45 days to total remission in different categories. Total remission has been announced for juvenile and elderly prisoners.

A special remission of 90 days was granted to prisoners convicted for life imprisonment, except those convicted for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, adultery, robbery, kidnapping/abduction and terrorist acts (as defined in the Anti-Terrorism (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 1999 (No XIII of 1999). Another special remission of 45 days has been announced for all other convicts, except those abovementioned, the condemned prisoners and those undergoing sentences under the Foreigners Act 1946. These remissions are admissible provided that the convicts have undergone two-thirds of their substantive sentence of imprisonment. The presidential remission includes complete remission to male prisoners who are 65 years old or above, and have undergone at least one-third of their substantive sentence, except those involved in culpable homicide and terrorist acts, as defined in the Anti-Terrorism (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 1999.

A total remission has been announced for woman prisoners who are 60 years old and above, and have undergone at least one-third of their sentence, except those involved in culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. Special remission of one year has been given to woman prisoners accompanying children and are serving sentences for crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorist acts.Similarly, a total remission has been announced for juvenile convicts (under 18 years of age) who have served one-third of their substantive sentence, except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist acts, zina, robbery, kidnapping/abduction and anti-state activities.
