Parliamentary body won’t go abroad

* Takes notice of Munter’s statement over use of Pak airspace for NATO supplies

ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) on Friday decided not to record the statement of Mansoor Ijaz, the central character in the memo scandal, outside parliament of Pakistan at any cost.

The committee firmly resolved that Mansoor Ijaz’s statement would be recorded if he came to Pakistan to present his viewpoint before the committee in the Parliament House.

Committee Chairman Senator Mian Raza Rabbani of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), briefing the media after the meeting, said the committee would not go abroad to record the statement of Mansoor Ijaz.

Rabbani said the committee would also monitor the proceedings of the memo case in the judicial commission and would request the commission to share any new information with the committee. The committee empowered its chairman to summon an immediate session if any new information surfaced.

Rabbani told the media the committee also expressed its concern over the statement of US Ambassador Cameron Munter about using Pakistan’s airspace for NATO supplies and decided to summon secretaries of defence and foreign affairs to present their stance before the committee regarding the statement of the US ambassador. “Defence and foreign affairs secretaries were asked to inform the committee about the actual situation and why such a statement was released,” Rabbani said. He said that Senator Prof Khurhsid Ahmed of Jamaat-e-Islami had resigned from the committee’s membership over the NATO supplies issue.
