Judicial decisions should be respected, says Nawaz

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that there is a need to respect judicial decisions to strengthen democratic system in the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Nawaz said that the nation was committed to the implementation of judicial decisions and his party was also fully alive to its responsibilities.

An independent and strong judiciary is a solid foundation for a democratic system and deviation from its decisions is tantamount to destroying this institution, he said, adding that this is like digging a hole in the boat, which guarantees one’s safety.

The PML-N chief said that respect of judiciary in a country like Pakistan was also important for the promotion of national solidarity and strengthening of the federation.

He said serious internal problems and problems of national solidarity were the result of violation of constitution due to which the federating units faced complaints, whereas an independent judiciary provided guarantee to the implementation of constitutional provision and, thus, became a source of redressing the complaints of federating units.

Nawaz said that the present judiciary had unwavering faith in the constitution and was committed to not providing constitutional justification to any unconstitutional step for which all politicians and the entire nation, including the rulers, should be thankful to it.

He said that deviation from the decisions of the judiciary were tantamount to weakening the system upon which the political and democratic setup was based. He reminded that restoration of the constitution, supremacy of parliament, independent judiciary, free media and people’s right of electing and rejecting the rulers are the fruit of a long struggle and numerous sacrifices. He said that attitude of the elected rulers should be different from the attitude of dictators so that democracy was not confined to just lip-service, but the nation should reap its fruit.
