Govt, allies join heads to mull political scenario
ISLAMABAD: The government and its allies put their heads together on Sunday night to ponder over the political situation arising out from a contempt of court case against Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.
President Asif Ali Zardari presided over the meeting of coalition partners, which was attended by PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan, the MQM’s Farooq Sattar and Munir Khan Orakzai. PPP leaders Syed Khurshid Shah, Naveed Qamar, Senator Nayyar Hussain Bokhari and Raja Pervez Ashraf were also present.
A statement from the Presidency said the meeting discussed the current political situation and forthcoming Senate’s elections. It however, made no mention of the contempt of court case against the prime minister.
But sources said the meeting deliberated upon different possibilities in case any “adverse” decision comes against the prime minister who would appear before the court today (Monday).
Some federal ministers and senior PPP leaders said they would stand by the prime minister in adopting a stance that is correct, respectful and constitutional.
Separately, Aitzaz Ahsan, counsel for the prime minister, held a meeting with his client to discuss issues relating to latter’s appearance in the court.
Although, a PPP core committee’s meeting was scheduled in Islamabad, it could not be held due to inability of several leaders from other cities because of bad weather, and coalition partners meeting at the Presidency.
In Karachi, the Parliamentary Party of PPP Sindh in the Provincial Assembly met with its leader Pir Mazharul Haq in the chair.
The meeting reposed full confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and PM Gilani.
Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and 62 members of the parliamentary party also attended the meeting.
The Supreme Court is set to frame contempt of court charges today (Monday) against PM Gilani for not writing a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. staff report/agencies
