Ghee, oil mills shut to protest torching of tankers
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) on Sunday shut down all ghee and edible oil mills across the country in protest against torching of National Logistics Cell (NLC) oil tankers by private transporters.
All ghee and edible oil mills across the country remained closed to protest the incident of setting on fire of a number of oil tankers in Karachi. The strike has resulted in partial shortage of ghee and cooking oil in open market. PVMA Chairman Abdul Waheed said the tankers set on fire at the Port Qasim caused a loss of Rs 30 million.
He said the association was independent in giving transportation contracts to any party. The association also demanded protection to ghee and edible oil mills and safe and smooth transportation facilities for them. Prices of ghee and cooking oil are expected to rise after the closure of the mills.
The association alleged that private transporters who failed to get transportation contract from the association had set on fire a number of NLC tankers in Karachi on Friday. online
