Spillways of Attabad Lake to open tomorrow
Staff Report
ABBOTTABAD: The spillways of the Attabad Lake would open tomorrow (Monday), causing water level of the River Indus to enhance, making it flow at a much faster speed than usual.
“The majority of the people who are residing near the River Indus, have been asked to vacate their homes before stipulated time, in order to protect their lives and their belongings,” said Hazara Commissioner, Muhammad Khalid Khan Umarzai, on Saturday. “The residents of districts Haripur, Kohistan, Torghar and Mansehra and nearby villagers have also forewarned about the possibility of a flashflood,” he said. Umarzai said that the water of Attabad Lake will run through River Indus, hence this sudden rise in water level could cause serious damage to nearby districts. The commissioner also informed that due to torrential rains and heavy snowfall, Attabad Lake was holding much more water than its usual capacity, therefore, we need to release it forthwith to protect the local residents from disaster.
