JUI-F distances itself from peace process

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema e Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced that his party would not become a part of peace process initiated by the government.

Talking to newsmen following the meeting of JUI-F executive committee here, Fazl said that he is not expressing mistrust on the committees, adding that he is only briefing about the party’s decision.

He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had not consulted his party over the issue of peace process, however, he added if the government seeks his party’s cooperation then it can offer assistance.

The JUI-F chief further said that the Grand Jirga was assured on February 28, 2013 that it would be given a task for the restoration of peace.

“I was the first who demanded to bring the issue in the parliament.”

Fazl asserted that his party leader Mufti Kifayatullah, who was named in the five-member committee by the Taliban, is bound to accept the decision of the party.

The JUI-F said that the Taliban named Mufti Kifayatullah with good faith. The Taliban, however, should have named their representatives for the committee, he added.
