CJP takes suo motu notice of Muzaffargarh rape

* Directs Punjab IGP to submit report on incident on Tuesday

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Tasadduq Hussain Jillani Saturday took a suo motu notice of the Muzaffargarh incident in which a woman was sexually assaulted on the orders of a village panchayat. The incident took place a week ago when a villager sought the formulation of a panchayat after he accused a relative of having an affair with his wife. The accusers called for revenge and had the sister of the accused brought to the panchayat. Police and witnesses said the panchayat hearing lasted for a few minutes. The panchayat leader, identified as Nawaz, sentenced the woman to be raped by the men from the aggrieved party. The woman was taken to a room where a man belonging to the complainant’s side assaulted her. Taking notice of the incident the chief justice has summoned a report from the Punjab IG on February 4. Justice Jillani passed the following order: “Report be called from the inspector general of police, Punjab about the news item that a ‘puachayat’ directed that a forty-year-old woman should be subjected to gang-rape as a revenge of her brother’s illicit liaison with some woman. The report shall specifically comment on the veracity of the news and the action taken by the police.” The order said the report should be submitted by or before Tuesday, February 4.
