BISP to be made transparent, efficient body: Enver Baig

ISLAMABAD: Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairman Enver Baig has said BISP would be made a transparent and efficient organisation with a view to facilitating the beneficiaries in an adequate manner.
In an interview with DNA, Enver Baig said BISP would ensure improvement in the efforts to alleviate poverty in light of the prime minister’s vision and will bring transparency in the functions of the programme and live up to the commitment.
“While Rs 1,200 a month cash grant would continue to be extended to a large number of families, the major objective would be to graduate a sizable number of families out of poverty, make them stand on their own feet and then bring into the programme some more families,” he added.
The BISP chairman said there was need to revamp some of the programme’s components which would be done in due course of time. Therefore, the programme will change its focus, emphasising the graduation programmes including skills development initiative, and the future plans would take into consideration the needs of national and international markets for providing relevant training to the youth, he said.
Giving a brief account of his future priorities, Enver Baig said the BISP management was discussing numerous proposals to reform different schemes of the programme to make it more effective and poor-oriented.
To a question, he said the Prime Minister Small Business Loans Scheme aims at providing loans to the unemployed youth, especially educated people, looking to establish or extend their business enterprises.
