Govt, Taliban committees raise points for peace talks

ISLAMABAD: The committees formed by the government and Taliban put forward their respective points for peace talks during their first meeting held here on Thursday.

In a news conference following the meeting, Irfan Siddiqui and Maulana Samiul Haq representing their respective committees read out a joint statement outlining the demands presented during the meeting.

The government put forward five points during the talks:

- Talks should be held within the framework of the constitution.

- The scope of talks will be limited to insurgency affected areas.

- Activities which may hamper the dialogue process should be stopped.

- The jurisdiction of the Taliban committee and nine-member monitoring committee of Taliban should be made clear

- Duration of dialogue process should not be long.

The committee nominated by the Taliban put forward the following points:

- What is the mandate and power of the government committee?

- What is the capability of the government's committee to ensure the demands of Taliban are met?

- The Taliban committee has expressed desire to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and DG ISI Zaheerul Islam.

Maulana Samiul Haq said the Taliban committee would soon visit Waziristan to convey the demands of the government's committee to the Taliban leadership.

The committees agreed on two points during the meeting.

- There will be no action which would harm the peace process.

- Both committees condemned the recent attacks in the country

The committees have also agreed to hold their next meeting soon.
