Pakistani prisoner found dead in IOK jail

SRINAGAR: Pakistani prisoner Shaukhat Ali committed suicide in a prison in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK), Indian officials claimed on Saturday.

According to Indian media reports, Shaukat Ali was found dead in his cell in the district jail. He had allegedly used a scarf to hang himself from iron bars of a toilet window at the jail in Jammu city.

Ali’s parents dismissed claims of Indian jail officials and said their son could not commit suicide and was tortured.

The Pakistani High Commission is in contact with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and has called for an investigation into Shaukat Ali’s death. The Pakistani High Commission has demanded that security be provided to all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.

Indian media reports state that a probe has been launched and Shaukat Ali’s body has been sent for postmortem.

Shaukat Ali a resident of Sialkot was arrested in 2011 for accidentally crossing the border and charged under the Foreigners Act.
