CCP directed to probe airfare hike by private airlines

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs and Privatisation on Tuesday expressed concern over the reports of airfare increased by private airlines during the strike by the employees of Pakistan International Airline (PIA). The committee, which met here with Senator Saleem H Mandviwala in the chair, directed the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) to conduct an inquiry on the issue and submit report before the committee. It also directed the airlines to provide their flight operations data and details of airfare charged from the general public during the crisis period. The meeting also expressed its serious concern over excessive charges on airfare by the agents of private airlines and directed the airlines to keep vigilance and not let them take the undue advantage of the situation. CCP Chairperson Vadiyya Khalil informed the committee that the commission had formally initiated the inquiry in the matter of exorbitant increase in airfares by private airlines. She said that letters were also sent to private airlines, including Airblue Limited and Shaheen International, asking them to provide a comprehensive data on their airfares during the current month.
