Street crime on the rise in Karachi
KARACHI: The ongoing operation in Karachi may have curtailed the out of control target killing, kidnapping for ransom and other heinous crimes, however, the street crime has witnessed rise in the last two years since the operation against outlaws began.
In the two years of the operation 19,000 more cases of street crime were reported in the city.
In the two years since the operation began, target killing, kidnapping for ransom, car snatching and other heinous crimes saw a decline.
In the two years before the operation started (2011-2013) 98,812 cases of street crime were reported in the city while in the two years since the operation began (2013-2015) the number spiked to 117,636 cases reported.
In the two years before the operation 20,899 cases of mobile snatching were registered while in the two years following the operation 29,109 cases were registered translating to an increase of 39 percent.
Meanwhile, car snatchings witnessed a decline in the two years since the operation began. In the two years before the operation began 2,606 vehicles had been stolen from their owners while in the two years following the start of the operation the 1,328 cases of vehicle theft were reported in Karachi.
Similarly the number of vehicles snatched at gunpoint in the two years before the operation stood at 7,324 while in the two years following the operation the number declined to 5,338.
