Imran clarifies amendment in accountability commission ordinance, DG’s resignation
Imran says KPEC will remain independent, have all powers to nab any corrupt individual in province

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday announced to make a committee for reviewing amendment in the accountability ordinance.

Imran also warned that his party would resist every attempt by the ruling Pakistan Mualim League-N (PML-N) to clip the wings of National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The PTI chairman announced to review amendment in the accountability commission ordinance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Imran said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif are threatening the watchdog. “Both the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister are issuing threats to the commission. We strongly condemn them,” he said. “If NAB is doing good job, it should be praised and commended by the government,” he said.

“We shall strictly oppose the government’s attack on NAB,” said Imran. He said that NAB should be made an independent and autonomous body. “As per my commitment, KPEC will remain independent and will have all the powers to nab any corrupt individual in the province.

Imran held press conference for the clarification on the amendment in accountability commission ordinance and the director general’s (DG) resignation. “Not once did I or CM Pervaiz Khattak give any statement against General Hamid or KPEC when our sitting minister - Zia ullah Afridi – got arrested,” he argued.

He said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa accountability commission’s head did not have any complaints with the provincial government but with the accountability commissioner.

“It is shameful to see federal government making Khyber Pakhthunkhwa Ehtasab Commission amendments a reason to attack and undermine the NAB. We will not let that happen,” he said.

Therefore, he announced to review the amendment brought in the accountability commission’s law. He also said that he himself would lead the committee and if the amendment was found to be a hurdle in the process of accountability then it would be revoked.
