PM performs groundbreaking of Karachi’s Green Line Bus project
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday performed the groundbreaking of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System in Karachi-first ever Rapid Transit system of the country initiated by the federal government.
The Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System is a significant milestone in upgrading and decongesting the overburdened transport infrastructure of Karachi as well as reducing the cost and travel time for the residents of Karachi.
The Rapid Transit system would start from Surjani Town and culminate at Municipal Park M.A Jinnah Road.
After its completion, the corridor would benefit nearly 300,000 passengers a day.
The estimated cost of the corridor is Rs 16.085 billion and entire funding had been provided by the federal government.
The project would be completed within a year.
A fully autonomous company - Karachi Infrastructure Development Company Limited (KIDCL) - has been incorporated under a Board of Directors comprising a good mix of project stakeholders including senior government functionaries, independent and technical directors and members from academia to take all decisions independently for planning and implementation of the project.
Karachi Arrival:
Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi on Friday. He was welcomed by Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at the PAF Base Faisal upon his arrival.
The provincial home minister, chief secretary, DG Sindh Rangers, and IG Sindh Police were also present at the base.
At a meeting on arrival in Karachi, the Premier was briefed about the overall law and order situation in Sindh province.
Sindh Governor, Chief Minister and Director General Rangers Sindh Major General Bilal Akbar attended the meeting.
