USAID honours 204 graduates in AJK

MUZAFFARABAD: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Pakistan Reading Project held a graduation ceremony for 204 talented students from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) who received their associate degrees in education from the government colleges for elementary teachers.

This two-year degree programme ensures that these young teachers are fully trained and equipped to meet the needs of today’s classrooms.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Mian Abdul Waheed presided over the ceremony, which was held at the Government Postgraduate College, Muzaffarabad. Waheed praised the support of the United States government to Pakistan in the field of basic education.
The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project is sponsoring more than 3,500 scholarships for students enrolled in associate and bachelor degree programmes in education throughout the country. Additional scholarships are also available for in-service teacher training.
The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project is a $165 million project designed to help provincial and regional departments of education to

improve the reading skills of primary schoolchildren across the country.
This programme uses three components to improve the quality of early education: improved classroom learning environment for reading, improved policies and systems for reading and community-based support to reading in Pakistan.
