Uncertain situations affected cultural activities in 2010

* Pakistan got prominent achievements in arts, showbiz and games last year

KARACHI: The cultural activities in the country have badly been disturbed for the last some years owing to uncertain situation despite the fact that Pakistan got prominent achievements in arts, showbiz and games.

Renowned personalities belonging to different walks of life have also left us during the year. As per a report of the South Asia Media Commission and the Media Commission Pakistan, 13 journalists died while discharging their professional duties while a renowned journalist MA Zuberi also passed away during the last year.

Besides, famous director Javeed Fazil, noted poet and writer Dr Wazir Aga, Anees Nagi and Mohsin Ahsan also died in 2010.

Pakistan earned success in various sectors, of them the victory of hockey team in the Olympics Games was top of the list, while Pakistani Tennis Star Aaisamul Haq got achievement to play final in the USA.

Fashion shows held in Lahore, Karachi and Dubai have increased the success of Pakistani fashion designers and models.

Joyous activities were also seen regarding fine arts. Various exhibitions of juvenilia were held including Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture and VM Art Gallery.

Music: A three-day musical conference was held by the National Academy of Performing Arts in which youth talent was exposed, while a four-day music series also diverted the hearts of people at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi at the International Urdu Conference. On the occasion, Ghulam Ali, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, Tahira Syed, Salamat Ali, Muhammad Ali and others performed.

A three-day International Urdu Conference was also held in which writers, poets, researchers, critics and translators across the world participated.

A musical festival was also organised by the Tehzeeb Foundation in which famous Indian musician Pundit Washwa Mohan Bhatt and Ustad Raees Ali Khan performed.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mechal Hasan Band, Sajjad Ali, Ahmed Jahanzaib, Ali Azmat and other artists participated in the concerts in Karachi while famous singer Imran Khan from Britain also performed at a concert in Karachi. Musical programme of Cock Studio was also liked by a large segment of people.

Improvement was seen in Pakistani dramas and the famous dramas of the year were Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Be Nishan, and Main Mar Gaee.

The National Academy of Performing Arts continued their services for boosting theater and presented various plays including Khel Jari Hay.

The Arts Council, Karachi organised a youth festival in which a big opportunity was provided to youth to show their capabilities while the play of Fatima Surraya Bajya ‘Khali Godh’ was also played in collaboration with Japan Consulate.

The penal of Ahmed Shah got victory in the annual election of the Arts Council Karachi.

Various books were published during the year, of them top of the list was Nobeel Adbiat of Baqir Naqvi. This was the first book that was written in Urdu in association with the Nobeel Academy. An International Book Fair at Expo Centre was also organised successfully.

The terrorists killed 1,026 people in 47 attacks in the country during 2010 but despite this, the hopes of people are high as they are ready to combat all challenges.

The culture activities during the year is clear evidence that people love life while the year 2011 will rise with the beacon of hope and present a soft image of Pakistan in the world.
