KARACHI: At least five people, including a senior activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and another of the Awami National Party (ANP) were gunned down in separate incidents of targeted killing and violence in different areas of the metropolis on Monday.
According to details, unidentified armed men shot dead an activist of the MQM in front of the Nazimabad Inquiry Office. Area police said MQM’s joint sector in-charge Adil Jaffery was passing from the said locality when unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted him, sprayed him with bullets and fled.
On receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and moved the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital while tension engulfed the area. Following the incident, an angry mob took to the streets and staged a protest demonstration causing suspension of traffic and business activities in Nazimabad, Paposh Nagar and surrounding areas. Aerial firing was also reported from different areas. Two buses, one rickshaw and a tea hotel were set on fire in the said locality.
In another incident, unidentified armed motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire at Qaim Biryani Centre and killed an ANP Senior Vice President of Al-Falah Ward, Aziz Khan, 23, within the limits of Al-Falah Police Station. His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Riots started in the area and traders closed their shops after the incident. Police and Rangers were called in to control the situation. Al-Falah Police Station House Officer, Adeel Afzal, said that it was an incident of targeted killing and facts would be disclosed after the investigation was complete.
Separately, two unidentified armed men riding on a motorcycle shot dead a 22-year-old man within the jurisdiction of Korangi Police Station. The dead body was shifted to JPMC. According to the police, the victim was an owner of a general store and resident of Korangi.
Furthermore, four armed men entered a passenger bus near Naheed Khan Road and gunned down a young boy. His dead body was shifted to the JPMC. Police said that the victim was a student and resident of Sherpao Colony, Landhi.
In a snatching bid, unidentified armed men opened fire and injured four boys near Aladdin Park within the limits of Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Police Station.
